7 Red Flags When Choosing an MVA Lead Vendor

August 24, 20268 min read

Choosing the wrong MVA lead vendor can cost you tens of thousands of dollars and months of wasted intake time before you realize the leads were never going to convert. The good news is that low-quality vendors telegraph who they are on the very first call — if you know what to listen for. Here are seven red flags to watch for when choosing an MVA lead vendor.

Red flag 1: They will not tell you their cost per lead

A vendor who will not give you a clear, per-unit price on the first call is hiding something — usually that the price is high relative to the quality, or that it changes based on how much they think they can get out of you. Transparent vendors publish starting prices and give you exact state-specific pricing on a call. If you get a "it depends" or a "let's talk about your needs first" without a number, walk away.

Red flag 2: They sell shared leads

Shared leads — the same lead sold to multiple firms — are the single biggest predictor of a bad CPA. If a vendor sells shared leads, they are optimizing for their revenue per lead, not for your cost per case. Exclusive leads cost more per unit and almost always produce a better CPA. If a vendor's "exclusive" leads are actually just "exclusive for 24 hours," that is a shared lead with a delay.

Red flag 3: They have no replacement policy

Even the best vendors occasionally deliver a bad number, an out-of-state lead, or a duplicate. The question is what they do about it. A clear, written replacement policy for bad numbers, out-of-state leads, and duplicates is the baseline. No replacement policy — or a policy full of loopholes like "the lead must be called within 60 seconds" — means you eat the cost of every bad lead. That is not a partnership.

Red flag 4: They require long-term contracts

A vendor who is confident in their lead quality does not need to lock you in. Long-term contracts with no exit clause are a sign that the vendor knows their leads are not good enough to keep you on performance alone. Month-to-month or campaign-based agreements let you scale up when it works and walk away when it does not. Any vendor demanding a 12-month commitment before you have seen results is betting against you.

Red flag 5: They cannot tell you their conversion rates

A vendor who generates real leads knows roughly how often those leads convert to signed cases — because they track it. "We don't track that" or "it depends on your intake team" (true, but they should still have a benchmark) means they are not measuring outcomes. You want a vendor who can tell you their average close rate by delivery model and by state, and who talks about CPA, not just CPL.

Red flag 6: They use clickbait ad messaging

Go look at the ads your vendor runs. If the messaging is "Were you in an accident? Get paid!" or promises big settlements to people who were not really hurt, the vendor is generating volume, not quality. Clickbait messaging attracts unqualified tire-kickers who inflate lead counts and destroy close rates. Good vendors run ads that filter for injured, not-at-fault, insured accident victims — not ads that promise a payday to anyone who clicks.

Red flag 7: They do not ask about your intake team

This is the most overlooked red flag. A vendor who quotes you a price without asking a single question about your intake team — how many people, what hours, whether you have an auto-dialer, how fast you call — does not care whether you close. They are selling you leads, not cases. The right vendor asks about your intake capacity first, because your intake team determines which delivery model will actually work for you and what your real CPA will be.
